The college could be developed with a new two-storey building providing enough space for a further 300 pupils.

Cambridgeshire County Council has revealed proposals for the college, which opened in September 2013 with 132 students. The first floor of the new building would provide teaching areas for design, art and photography, including a dark room, as well as a dining/social space. The second floor would house further classrooms and an ICT suite.

The council has been working with the Cam Academy Trust, which runs the school, to work out the best way to provide extra places to cope with the demand from the expanding Cambourne area. The school currently has more than 900 students.

The Cam Academy Trust said in a statement: “Cambourne Village College is seeking to expand further to accommodate the continuing growth in the Cambourne community. Without the planned expansion, there will not be sufficient capacity to educate secondary age pupils from Cambourne within Cambourne itself.

“These current plans will provide what is likely to be needed in the coming few years. However, further plans are also being looked at to develop a new campus of the school in due course, very close to the current campus, to accommodate the considerable further growth in pupils that will be associated with development of Cambourne West that is anticipated to take place in the coming years.

“Discussion is taking place among all relevant authorities and further detail for this considerable further expansion – beyond the current proposed expansion – will be provided once clear ways forward have been clarified.”

The council has appointed Kier Construction to design and build the school extension.

The proposals are available for viewing at the school after 5pm weekdays or between 10am and 4pm at weekends until September 27. The plans are also available on a downloadable form on the school’s website, cambournevc.org.

Subject to a planning permission, construction work could start around Easter 2019, with a view to being ready for pupils and staff to use from September 2019.
