Cyclist keeps on successful trail

Louis Rolfe capped a good week with a silver medal at the British Track Cycling Championships.

The 19-year-old Cambridge cyclist was included in the Great Britain Para-cycling Programme for 2017 on Thursday, and was then second in the para-cycling C1-5 individual pursuit in Manchester.

Rolfe has been making rapid progress in the sport, having won the C1-5 team sprint with Jody Cundy and Jon Allan-Butterworth at the Rio Paralympics and also earning the bronze medal in the C2 individual pursuit at the Games.

Jon Norfolk, the Great Britain Cycling Team Para-cycling head coach, said: “The last 12 months have been incredible for the team and topping the medal tables at the Paralympics and world championships was a brilliant achievement.

“However, we won’t be resting on our laurels and the focus of the programme is to maintain the momentum created and to repeat our success at Tokyo 2020.

“The squad we’ve named is full of Paralympic and world champions as well as a number of riders who we believe have the potential to improve and become medal competitive over the next four-year cycle.

“With a world championships on the track and road as well as a number of road world cups, it will be a busy year for the team and riders and staff are looking forward to the challenge ahead.”

In Manchester, Rolfe clocked 4min 35.415sec in a factored time in the C2 event for silver, with Megan Giglia taking gold in 4.34.356 and Jon Gildea earning bronze in 4.35.667.

After the event, he tweeted: “Great day @hsbc_sport National track championships @nationalcyclingcentre in Manchester. Felt great to go so close to my Rio pursuit time!”

The UCI Para-cycling World Championships are in Los Angeles from March 2 to 5.
