A bus company has blamed congestion problems in Cambridge for its decision to reduce a number of services.

Stageoach East came under fire from Labour party members Tim Andrews and Frances Amrani who were unhappy that the number of buses on Citi 1 and Citi 3 routes serving Fulbourn would be halved and the number 17 service from Teversham was to be axed.

But Andy Campbell, managing director of Stagecoach East, said that increasing congestion problems in the city had forced them to run sections of some services at a reduced frequency.

He said: “Unfortunately, the increasing congestion problems within Cambridge leave us with no option but to run sections of some services less frequently in order to improve overall reliability and connectivity throughout our network.”

The Citi 1 and Citi 3 remain 10-minute services as far as Cherry Hinton but the leg to Fulbourn will reduce to every 30 minutes from February 18 – to build in ‘recovery time’ and ensure a reliable service.

From March 4, the Citi 3 will be extended from the Fulbourn superstore to replace journeys on route 17 between Cherry Hinton and Stetchworth, and includes the villages of Fulbourn and Teversham.

Mr Campbell said: “We apologise to any passengers affected by these unavoidable changes – but we are hopeful of returning to a more frequent service in the future as and when the Greater Cambridge Partnership implements schemes to deal with the city’s congestion issues.”

Mr Andrews and Ms Amrani, who lobbied the company on behalf of concerned Fulbourn and Teversham residents, said the changes would hit the elderly and disabled.

Mr Andrews said: “This is another kick in the teeth for the hard pressed travellers and commuters of Teversham and Fulbourn.

“It will be particularly worrying for the elderly and disabled, who have no access to a car, leaving them isolated in our villages.”
