Cambridge Roar raises a fantastic £30,000

Founder Tony Murdock delighted with festival success
The Cambridge Roar festival has been hailed a major success after more than 3,000 people attended a dozen events over the summer raising an impressive £30,000.
The fourth annual event was topped by a Fire and Ice Ball at the Quy Mill Hotel and Spa which attracted 300 people.
The 12 events held between June and September made the festival the longest and busiest so far. Highlights included the sporting heroes dinner with Olympian Goldie Sayers, stars from the motor racing world Mark Blundell and Steve Parrish, and football legend Roy McFarland.
A week later comedians Lou Sanders, Phil Wang, Alun Cochrane and Adam Hess had an audience of more than 450, doubled up with laughter during the sell-out comedy night.
The final furlong dinner was also a success with Gay Kelleway, the only woman to ride a winner at Royal Ascot, joined by fellow trainer George Scott; director of racing at jockey club racecourses, Michael Prosser; legendary jump jockey Bob Champion and former flat racing jockey Freddie Tylicki, who, in 2016, was left paralysed in the lower half of his body after an accident at Kempton Park.
Tony Murdock, founder and chairman of the festival, was delighted with the events.
He said: “This has been the best year yet! I think it is testament to the hard work the Roar team puts in, as well as the variety of events that attracts so many local people.
“We are extremely grateful to everyone who attended and dug deep for the three charities.
“It’s been a fantastic year with a whole host of amazing people helping us from the media and sporting worlds, to all the local businesses who sponsored the Roar. We offer them a massive thank you for their generosity. Here’s to Roar 2018.”
The festival, with events held in the grounds of the Quy Mill Hotel at Stow Cum Quy, was raising money for three charities: Arthur rank Hospice Charity, East Anglian Air Ambulance and Cambridge United Community Trust. Each will receive £10,000.
Martin Millard, director of Cheffins one of the Roar sponsors, said one of this year’s highlights was the final event, the Fire and Ice Ball: “It was a glamorous finale to the Cambridge Roar season, and the auction was well backed by the crowd. Deep pockets and a well-stocked bar ensured that plenty of money was raised for the three incredibly worthy causes that were being supported.”
The festival, the only one of its kind in the region, has to date raised about £90,000.
As well as the fun events, the festival also creates opportunities for businesses to network, entertain clients and reward staff.
