Cambridge is top place in the country to work.

A new study reveals that the university city is the best in the UK based how easy it is to get employment, the affordability of housing and employee satisfaction.

Cambridge headed a list that saw London fail to make the top 20 and with Milton Keynes and Nottingham second and third respectively.

The latest study was carried out jobs site Glassdoor and their league table left Cambridge sitting pretty at the top.

Milton Keynes and Nottingham were next in a league table compiled by jobs site Glassdoor.

Dr Andrew Chamberlain, Chief Economist with Glassdoor, said: “Cambridge has long had a reputation for one of Britain’s most loved cities, but now it’s emerged as a prime spot for high-tech companies which is clearly having an impact on where people decide to live and work.

“These results are a reminder that although there are more jobs in London and employees are generally pretty satisfied, it is a competitive place to work and an expensive place to live.

“Towns and cities such as Nottingham, Leeds and Reading offer decent salaries and job prospects combined with a lower cost of living which means your money will go further, you can save, and still have a good quality of life.”

Top jobs in Cambridge included software engineers, chefs and sales reps and the average value of homes is almost £437,000.

Peterborough was listed in the top 10 being the fifth best place to work in behind Leeds.

The top 10 best towns and cities to work in for 2016 are:

1) Cambridge

2. Milton Keynes

3. Nottingham

4. Leeds

5. Peterborough

6. Coventry

7. Reading

8. Bradford

9. Northampton

10. Swindon
