The house-clearing service will hold its latest auction at its Canterbury Street HQ this coming Saturday.

Biddys founder Bridget Lawrence said: “We started in 2011, as a house clearance company, and then last year, in August, we opened the auction side of the business because it was a natural progression.

“The idea initially was to help clients recoup some of the cost involved in clearing a property by selling some of the items for them – rather than taking them to charity or landfill. But we found there wasn’t really an outlet for middle-of-the-range items, if you like, in Cambridge.”

Bridget said many people are put off by the prices at high-end auction houses, but shows like Flog It! and Bargain Hunt have aided her business.

“They realise that they can come here and get valuable pieces,” she observed, “and we get a lot of younger people coming in who have ultra-modern properties.”

Auctions usually have between 300 and 400 lots, ranging from artwork to gold and silver to garden furniture.

“Now the general public bring items in for us as well,” said Bridget, who gives proceeds from the café at the back of her shop on auction days to Macmillan.

Saturday’s auction is at 11am. View items in advance at the shop or at biddyshouseclears.com.
