The Sounds Green Programme 2017

Wednesday 5 July 2017, 6.15pm - Mentés Másként Ensemble

This lively award-winning group specialises in the traditional folk music and dance of their native Hungary. Mentés Másként are constantly looking for new ways to revive ancient tunes using original instruments, singing and traditional instrumental techniques. Supported by the Mátyás Seiber Trust and Cambridge Szeged Society.

Wednesday 12 July 2017, 6.15pm - Dodo Street Band

Described as ‘the last word in Celtic Gypsy Klezmer’, Dodo Street Band combine fiddle with accordion, bass and bodhran. We defy you to resist the urge to get up and dance!

Wednesday 19 July 2017, 6.15pm - Westcombe Brass: Glenn Miller and Gershwin

Westcombe Brass are an exciting and versatile brass quintet based in London. Individually the group are successful young professionals, appearing with most of the major orchestras in this country; together they are a dynamic quintet able to perform works and arrangements spanning hundreds of years, in a variety of different styles.

Wednesday 26 July 2017, 6.15pm - Afrosamba

Afrosamba is a Brazilian four-piece encompassing styles such as Afro Brazilian Jazz, Samba and Bossa Nova. Influences are drawn from João Gilberto’s harmonic complexities, Airto Moreira’s experimental rhythms and Jorge Ben Jor’s laid back approach.

Cambridge University Botanic Garden has announced the programme for this year’s Sounds Green open-air music series from Cambridge Summer

Music.

Beverley Glover, Director of the Botanic Garden, says: ‘We are delighted to be hosting Sounds Green with Cambridge Summer Music once again. It’s a rare and wonderful opportunity to be able to enjoy the Garden in the evening and we love to see groups of families, friends and colleagues relaxing in the Garden at the end of the day, listening to music in this spectacular setting in the heart of Cambridge.”

Cambridge University Botanic Garden will open its gates late on Wednesday evenings throughout July for the Sounds Green series – relaxed, sociable, picnic concerts in the Garden. A rug and optional picnic are all that are required to enjoy an array of music beginning at 6.15pm and lasting an hour, with the Garden closing at 8pm.

This year’s line-up of music brings a mixture of traditional folk music from the award-winning Mentés Másként Ensemble; Celtic Gypsy Klezmer from the Dodo Street Band; Glenn Miller

to Gershwin brass from London’s versatile Westcombe Brass quintet and Afro Brazilian Jazz, Samba and Bossa Nova from Afrosamba.

The event is suitable for all ages. Visitors are welcome to picnic in the Garden. Food and drink will also be provided by The Garden Café; bar drinks will also be served by Thirsty and Jack’s Gelato will be providing home-made ice-creams on the Main Lawn.

Normal Garden admission applies and although there is no extra charge to attend Sounds Green, donations are invited towards the musicians’ performance fees.

Visitors are encouraged to bring along a rug, small folding chair or cushion to sit on and check the weather forecast to see if a brolly and raincoat may be required for the English summer.
