The Great Get Together – in memory of murdered MP Jo Cox – takes place this weekend with a number of chances to be involved in the Cambridge area.
On Saturday (June 17) 9am-5pm, Emmaus Cambridge will be bringing people together at its site off the A10 at Landbeach where there will be a barbecue and raffle with proceeds going to support homeless people living in Emmaus communities.
Cambridgeshire Hope Not Hate and Cambridge City Council will be hosting a get together on Sunday (June 18) at Meadows Community Centre from noon to 3pm. Participants are encouraged to bring and share their favourite or traditional dish.
In support of the initiative, the county council is holding its own afternoon tea party on Friday, June 16 hosted by chairwoman Cllr Mandy Smith, which will bring different communities together.
Cllr Smith said: “With over 100,000 events happening nationwide, this weekend is our chance, particularly after the tragic scenes in Manchester and London, to come together, whether as communities, neighbourhoods or individuals, to learn about each other, make friends and unite. And with other Great Get Togethers happening across the county, we hope this is something that will develop and build each year so that all our communities are involved in years to come to continue to make our county a vibrant and great place to live.”
The Big Lunch 2017 will also be held this weekend. The Big Lunch, funded by the National Lottery, is an annual get-together for neighbours. The event is in its ninth year and takes place each year in June. Joining together in memory of former MP Jo Cox
