Cambridge shoppers will be joined by local MP Daniel Zeichner and MEP Alex Mayer as they call for a global ban on testing cosmetics on animals.

The local Labour representatives will be celebrating the five year anniversary of the European cosmetics ban on animal testing but also backing the Body Shop’s campaign calling for the United Nations to adopt an international convention that will end the process across the world by 2020.

The event is taking place on Friday, March 2 at 1.25pm at Lion Yard, 36 Petty Cury, Cambridge, CB2 3NB.

Mr Zeichner and Ms Mayer will speak to store boss Dee Tailor who will explain that they have already collected hundreds of signatures on a petition since the start of the campaign two months ago.

Cosmetics testing on animals has been banned across Europe since 2003, but there are still no laws banning testing on cosmetic products and ingredients in 80 per cent of the world.

The Body Shop is aiming to get eight million signatures on their petition and have already reached over 4.5 million.

Mr Zeichner said: “Britain is a nation of animal lovers, so I am sure everyone in Cambridge will want to get behind this campaign.”

Ms Mayer, who is a member of the cross-party European Animal Welfare Group added: “Animal testing on products and ingredients is outdated, cruel and unnecessary but sadly over 500,000 animals are used by the cosmetics industry every year. It is time that we stood up for the animals that can’t stand up for themselves and end animal testing for good. So let’s make sure the Body Shop’s campaign is a success - that will make me a happy bunny.”
