Residents making a mint from hiring out their driveways to city shoppers
More than 5,000 Cambridge residents are coining it in for Christmas by renting out their driveways.
Driveway parking provides a Christmas ‘bonus’ for shoppers who find the city’s car parks either full or too expensive.
Shoppers can save a sack full of money by parking on rented driveways as Christmas approaches.
Some shopping centre car parks cost three times or more than that of YourParkingSpace.co.uk sites
Cambridge resident Glenda Stock and her husband signed up for the website after retiring last year.
She said: “We were fed up driving so got rid of the car. I saw the website one day and so I registered for it. We get ocasional parkers who come to the city for the weekend or an occasion. I get £5 a day and I won’t make a fortune out of it but it helps.”
People book a driveway or space to park via the website and the dates chosen are then passed on to the resident.
Another Cambridge resident, Alessia Arduin of Hills Road, added: “We all share a flat but none of us own a car so we decided to rent out the space. We have been doing it for more than a year now and it has worked perfectly. We have no regrets.
“It gets very busy around Christmas time and the money we get, we put back into the flat. We get a lot of people who use the station or the town centre. I would recommend it.”
