A vigil has beenheld outside the Guildhall in Cambridge for the public to mourn and reflect after last night’s bombing at the Manchester Arena.

The vigil was called by Labour’s parliamentary candidate for the city, Daniel Zeichner.

He has invited candidates and members of the public to the short vigil at 11am today (Tuesday, May 23) outside the Guildhall.

The blast happened at 22.35pm on Monday at the end of a concert by US singer Ariana Grande. Twenty-two people, including children, have been killed and 59 injured.

Police said the lone male attacker, who died in the blast, detonated an improvised explosive device.

Mr Zeichner said: “I know the thoughts of everyone in Cambridge are with the families who have tragically lost loved ones.

“Terror has struck once again in one of our great cities. Today it is right to take time out to mourn and to reflect but also to celebrate the work of our emergency services and restate that we all have more in common than that which divides us.”

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough mayor James Palmer posted on Twitter: “Sickened to see the news from Manchester. My thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by the attack.”

The flag over the Guildhall has been lowered to half-mast as a mark of respect for the victims.

Cambridge mayor Cllr Jeremy Benstead said: “Innocent people enjoying a night out have been the victims of a sickening act of violence that has taken lives and caused untold suffering.

“Along with the people of Manchester and everyone around the country, my thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones.”

The main political parties have all suspended general election campaigning.
