The cycle and pedestrian bridge could be used by 4,000 riders a day.

Cambridgeshire County Councillors backed plans for the Abbey to Chesterton Bridge, which will provide a vital link for the 1.4 mile Chisholm Trail, one of the schemes funded by the Greater Cambridge City Deal, that aims to help cyclists and pedestrians reach jobs, transport and education avoiding busy routes.

The plans were agreed by councillors at the economy and environment committee. The proposals are the result of two and half years of public consultation and refinements.

Cambridgeshire county councillor Ian Bates, chairman of the economy and environment committee, said: “This bridge will provide a vital and safe link for cyclists and pedestrians to jobs, transport hubs such as rail and education.

“We know in Cambridge that cycleways are not only well used but when provided encourage even more people to get on their bikes and reduce congestion and pollution, improve health and therefore boost the economy. It is expected the planning application will be heard in January and If approval is given, work could start in the summer of 2017.”

A new bridge would provide a direct, convenient link between employment, residential and educational establishments on each side of the river Cam.
