A cyclist has died after a crash on the guided busway near Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, police have said.

Emergency services were called to the incident on the busway in Trumpington at 4.45pm today (Thursday, September 13).

A major incident was declared by Stagecoach East shortly after.

A spokesman for Stagecoach East said it is assisting the police with their inquiries.

The company said the busway will be closed at Long Road while an investigation is carried out.

The circumstances surrounding the crash are not yet known.

But speaking at the Cambridge south area committee on June 4, newly-elected Trumpington councillor Katie Thornburrow said she thought fences should be put up to keep cyclists and pedestrians on the path separate from the buses that use the busway on the stretch south from the city railway station to Addenbrooke’s Hospital and the Trumpington Park & Ride.

She warned that buses went quickly on that stretch of busway, and it could be dangerous if people swerved onto the tracks by mistake or fell.

A week later, on June 11, a 39-year-old pedestrian needed hospital treatment after being clipped by the wing mirror of a bus close to Long Road.

In November 2015, an 81-year-old woman pedsestrian died after a collision with a bus on the busway near Station Road, Swavesey.

Jennifer Taylor, of Meadow Lane, Over, had been walking in the dark with her husband, who was not injured.

In July 2017, Whippet Coaches sacked a driver who had veered off the busway in Trumpington three weeks earlier, reportedly to avoid cyclists, after it emerged he had been travelling above 20mph in a 15mph zone.
