It’s a bid to reduce the number of drivers in Cambridge’s newest neighbourhood

The University of Cambridge and E-Car Club has launched a new car club at Eddington in a bid to lower car ownership on the development in North West Cambridge.

E-Car Club has deployed two hybrid vehicles at Eddington. The cars can be booked for between an hour and several days at a time.

Amanda Nolan, transport manager at the University of Cambridge, said: “It is really exciting that we are bringing a car club to Eddington.

“As part of our Travel Plan we need to keep car traffic to less than 40 per cent of all journeys created by our development. By providing residents with E-Car Club vehicles, as well as excellent cycling and walking facilities and providing quality local bus services, we can reduce car use both here and to other areas of Cambridge even further.”

The vehicles have an RFID card access system, meaning the cars can be booked online (or via the E-Car Club mobile app) and used by several different people throughout the day.

it costs £5.50 per hour or £40 per day for the smaller of the two cars, including insurance.

Patrick Cresswell, head of marketing at E-Car Club, added: “We are delighted to expand our operations into Cambridge with today’s launch at Eddington. Working alongside the University, we believe that uptake of the scheme will be popular amongst residents. The whole community can benefit by becoming members.”

Local residents who live outside of the development can join for £15.
