Firefighters tackled a blaze in a flat above a business in Mill Road, Cambridge last night (Wednesday, June 6).

Shortly after 9pm, three crews, including an aerial appliance, from Cambridge, one crew from Cottenham, one crew from Sawston and one crew from Linton attended the scene.

Firefighters arrived to find a fire in a mid-terrace flat above a business premises. The fire was affecting the roof space of two buildings and smoke was billowing across the street. Wearing breathing apparatus the crews extinguished the fire using a hose reel and a jet.

A road closure was put in place as a safety precaution.

Station commander Danny Kelly, one of the officers at the scene, said: “The crews arrived to find a developing fire in the roof space that was spreading. It had already gotten hold of one of the roofs, which was significantly damaged.

“The fast actions from the first crews on scene meant the fire was confined to the roof spaces and no other parts of the building. This quick work certainly saved the rest of the buildings and stopped the fire from affecting other premises.”

Firefighters had returned to their stations by midnight. The service determined that the cause of the fire was accidental.
