Part of a £250,000 grant will be used to develop an innovative augmented reality project, which will bring new life to displays at the Fitzwilliam Museum.

The money was secured by Visit Cambridge and Beyond from a Discover England fund – one of 12 heritage towns to benefit.

The aim is to bring heritage to life and make it more appealing for youngsters.

The app will enable a new generation of museum visitors to travel through the diverse collections using interactive technology to explore the exhibits and stories behind the world-class collections held at the Fitzwilliam Museum.

Kate Carreno, assistant director of central services at the Fitzwilliam Museum and board member of Visit Cambridge, explained how the app will work: “Our vision for this app is that it will appeal to people who are new to Cambridge and to the Fitzwilliam.

“We want it to feel like you have been given a VIP pass to explore our remarkable building and collections – a personal invitation to embark on a journey of discovery through a world of art.”

The app will be available through online travel agencies, trade partners, app stores, and direct to consumers.
