Residents are planning a street celebration in the hopes of saving a historic Cambridge home as it emerges it could be in danger of demolition.

Campaigners say “York House” at 292 Hills Road in Cambridge was built in 1924 for Cyril Ridgeon, founder of builders’ merchants Ridgeons.

The building, which stands at the corner of Hills Road and Long Road could be demolished, with locals fearing this could be part of a city-wide trend of “dull and generic” buildings taking over from more characterful older designs.

Cllr Colin McGerty, recently elected to represent Queen Edith’s ward at Cambridge City Council, said: “It’s a worrying trend to see an especially beautiful house being demolished even before any application has been made for what might replace it.

“It is a Lutyens style house of significant value to the street scene on Hills Road.

“With that and 291 opposite both under threat of redevelopment, the main gateway to our city is in danger of becoming sadly dull and generic.”

Now locals are banding together to organise a “celebration” at 3pm on Sunday (May 13) which will look back on the building’s heritage.

A spokesman for the campaigners said: “Although we have not been able to stop the demolition, we do not want this building’s loss to pass unnoticed. Please join us at 3pm on Sunday May 13 to celebrate 292’s distinguished history and to show your concern at the escalating threats to Cambridge’s characterful historic housing stock.”

Until very recently, the front of York House was decorated with a white rose. Campaigners are being urged to bring along a white rose, the symbol of the House of York, to mark the occasion.

On April 25, Cambridge City Council’s planning committee rejected plans to knock down the house next door at 291 Hills Road to make way for 15 flats.
