Ridgeons’ plans to turn its Cromwell Road site in Cambridge into homes have been given the green light by the city council.

The builders’ merchants has been given outline planning permission for 245 homes – a mixture of apartment blocks and houses with a park running through the centre of the site. The development will include affordable homes – 40 per cent – along with car parking, a community building and access to the Chisholm Trail cycle route.

Ian Northen, chief executive of the Ridgeon Group, said “We are pleased to note the approval of these plans by committee members, in reflection of the years of hard work which have gone into this important site for Cambridge. Ridgeons is committed to leaving a positive legacy of development on the Cromwell Road site and we are confident that these plans will deliver this.”

A development partner will be selected by Ridgeons this year with demolition of the firm’s warehouses starting later in 2018. Ridgeons will move to premises off Coldhams Lane.

The city council’s planning committee approved the plans last Wednesday (February 7).
