The punting company says it wants people who use wheelchairs to be able to punt too.

Scudamore’s Punting Company has been granted permission to revamp both its punting stations on the River Cam in Cambridge.

The firm proposed the alterations to the Mill Pit and Quayside sites as both “suffer from outdated and compromised infrastructure”, according to documents submitted to Cambridge City Council’s planning department.

Problems, it says, include access to the sites and congestion at peak times.

Scudamore’s hopes to update its facilities by building new ticket offices and pontoons, as well as creating better access.

Mill Pit will see a new access ramp, leading onto the station from Laundress Green, built. Improved pontoons will also be installed, adding handrails, while the ticket office will be changed to address congestion for customers leaving the area.

At Quayside, because of space constraints, Scudamore’s is planning to install a powered stair lift and upgrade its ticket office and pontoons.
