Strawberry Fair returns on Saturday (June 2) and organisers promise it will be bigger and stronger than last year.

This year, the fair, which is held on Midsummer Common, has moved in a new direction with a refreshed programme and vision as it looks to its future as a commercial interest company.

The Kids Park, named in memory of one of the fair’s most dedicated and long serving committee members, Drew Park, has also been “newly energised”.

The day will also feature Cambridge Woodland Academy, who will run forest school workshops throughout the day - and there will crafts and dressing up, and some brilliant performances.

A spokeswoman for the fair said: “We are also pleased to welcome a new stage area to the fair in Cambridge’s hugely popular clubnight, Supertunes, whose rousing call is ‘prepare to dance and be happy’. With their new area, they promise to take you on a feel-good house and techno journey accompanied by visual effects and video on a giant screen.

“Alongside these areas we have these stages returning for another year: The Flying Pig Stage, Hatters, The Village Green, The Kings Head, Rebel Arts Bandstand, The RBG Stage, The Portland Ballroom, The Cambridge Arts Area, Cambridge 105, Scarecrow Corner, Green Machine, Wigwam, Love Music Hate Racism and The Buskers Stage - all with the heroes theme planned carefully into their set, decor, costumes and music.”

The winners of the Cambridge Band Competition, an integral event in the funding calendar, teenage two-piece rock band Influx of Insanity will also perform.

Since 1974, the fair has been organised and staffed entirely by volunteers in a display of community spirit, which has kept the fair running for so long.
