Cambridgeshire horror smash: victims named by police

Police appealing for witnesses

A man and a woman who died in a collision in Mepal on Monday (February 27) have been named.

John Smith, 19, of Willow Park, Beck Row, Mildenhall was driving a Ford Fiesta van along the A142 Iretons Way at about 5pm when it was in collision with a Vauxhall Meriva. Sadly Mr Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wendy Wheatley, 74, of Valentine Close, Manea was a passenger in the Vauxhall. She was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge but sadly died.

The driver of the Vauxhall, a man in his 70s, and a teenage passenger in the Fiesta suffered serious injuries and were taken to Addenbrooke’s.

Anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed the collision is asked to call the Road Policing Unit on 101.
