Police close road near to Cambridge school after incident

A man has been arrested following a reports of a serious assault which forced police to close a road outside a secondary school.

Police have confirmed the road outside St. Bede’s Inter-Church school on Birdwood Road, Cherry Hinton will be closed for a number of hours today, September 27.

A cordon has been put in place where St. Thomas Road meets Birdwood Road but the school insist it was not linked to the alleged assault incident.

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Constabulary said: “Police were called at 6.39am to reports of a serious assault in St Thomas’s Square, Cambridge.

“A man has been taken to hospital with serious, but not life threatening injuries after being struck with a glass.

“A man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of causing GBH and taken to Parkside Police Station.

“An area has been cordoned off and roads surrounding the incident will remain closed whilst the scene is examined. “

Bus company Stagecoach have confirmed they will not be serving the area until further notice.
