An additional £1.6million from the government for Cambridgeshire County Council has been welcomed by leader Cllr Steve Count, but it’s not enough.

The financial boost follows months of lobbying the government by the authority under its FairDeal4Cambs campaign.

“While welcoming this additional government grant allocation, it is once again allocated on the existing formula,” Cllr Count said. “So two neighbouring counties with populations of just 15 per cent more than us received 30 per cent more in this one-off grant.

“This clearly demonstrates the funding inequalities we’ve been highlighting through our FairDeal4Cambs campaign and how we need to continue to raise this issue at the very highest level.”

Cllr Count praised Tory MPs Heidi Allen and Lucy Frazer for sharing the county’s fairer funding message.

The final revenue support settlement for 2018-19 included additional one-year allocations for the county of just over £185,000 to support unaccompanied asylum-seeking children, and £1.452m for adult social care. The cost of supporting unaccompanied asylum-seeking children in 2017-18 has risen and the funding will help to continue to provide this support.

The extra funding will be used to support an extension to the council’s reablement service, which provides short-term support to help people learn the skills needed for daily living and reduce the amount of care they need, and in buying more interim beds in residential and nursing homes to support older people.

The council’s revenue support grant from government was £15.3m.
