Candidates for the May 4th mayoral election tell the Cambridge Independent why people should vote for them.
Julie Howell, Campaigner and parish councillor, Green Party
Why should people vote for you?
I have dedicated my life to the public service of others. In particular I’ve been a devoted champion of disabled and older people’s rights as well providing support to younger people via my former university and in my community as a parish councillor. The personal qualities of kindness, compassion and empathy may be considered ‘soft’, but it takes great strength, courage and determination to stand up for communities in the face of the relentless pursuit of profit and growth at whatever the cost. I will be a high-visibility mayor who will listen more than I speak and I will work hard for the benefit of all Cambridgeshire and Peterborough residents.
Cambridge has £70m for new housing – how should this be spent?
I would be committed to building social housing. We need suitable, accessible housing that meets people’s needs in areas where it is needed. Villages desperately need to retain younger people to secure their future ability to thrive, yet many find there is no affordable housing in their village. I would ensure that housing is built to high standards of energy efficiency to reduce fuel bills and combat fuel poverty. Housing must meet the changing needs of our aging population. Many find themselves imprisoned within their homes as their mobility changes. We must build houses that suit the needs of people who want to stay in their own homes.
How would you approach working with the City Deal and Cambridgeshire County Council to improve transport/infrastructure?
It’s painfully obvious that the deal is deeply unpopular with those it affects. The protests about the proposed busway at the West Fields has caused many residents and their supporters to rise up in protest. I’m keen to add my voice to theirs. I would work with all communities to deliver the infrastructure they so urgently want and need and will help people living and working in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough to develop their communities in ways which are both sustainable and healthy. I will work hard to ensure all parties get the type of development that supports their needs and acknowledges their wishes.
