Residents of Melbourn, Bassingbourn and The Mordens can attend public hearings at the Guildhall on Thursday and Friday to discuss the proposed move to a Hertfordshire constituency.

A spokesperson from Melbourn Parish Council said: “Councillors and residents of Melbourn do not want to become part of a North East Hertfordshire parliamentary constituency.

“To be told by the Boundary Commission that its reasons for this are that Royston is the nearest market town and there are good transport links to it is quite frankly preposterous.

“Melbourn has its roots in agriculture and now we are part of the science community of Cambridge.

“We need an MP who understands and represents our community’s needs. We want an MP who will argue Melbourn’s case with Cambridgeshire County Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council when they are considering how to allocate their sparse staff resources.

“It doesn’t stack up that a busy MP will have the time to learn about issues that will not affect 95 per cent of the constituency.”

The Local Government Boundary Commission has recently confirmed that no local areas will be moved from South Cambridgeshire District (local authority). The current proposals are for constituency changes proposed by the Boundary Commission for England.

The move would not change the local authority that provides the services received by residents.

More information about the public hearings can be found online.
