Lyndhurst is a thoughtfully renovated and beautifully laid-out detached home, only six miles from Cambridge and just down the road from Northstowe, maintained to an exceptionally high standard of order and cleanliness.

The main reason for this is proud homeowner, amateur interior designer and lady of the house, Beth Aspinall.

Shoes must be removed on entry and not a single item in this open and very inviting abode is out of sync or out of place.

Beth and her husband Andrew, who owns and runs A R Aspinall & Sons Ltd – a builders merchant based in Over – have been living at the property with their three children, one of whom has recently left home to join the army, for nine years.

“We’ve basically pulled the house apart,” explained Beth, who is originally from London (her husband hails from Willingham).

“When we moved in, it was quite dated. We ripped all the bathrooms out – all four bathrooms are brand new – and redecorated the bedrooms.

“We had the kitchen put in three years ago. It’s not quite doubled in size, but it has made a huge difference.”

No stone has been left unturned and the sheer attention to detail is immediately obvious. Other keenly observed features of note include oak doors throughout, underfloor heating in the kitchen, solid oak flooring in the sitting room, designer wallpaper, new radiator valves throughout and new carpets upstairs.

A separate gym/games room – which could easily be converted into a living space, an office or an indoor swimming pool (its previous incarnation) – is located at the end of the garden.

“We’ve reached the maximum of what we can do to the house – there’s nothing else we can do now,” said Beth. “It’s time to move on.”

Beth clearly has a real flair for interior design and has very much enjoyed the whole refurbishment process, which she says took about seven years.

“I’ve just put my own little stamp on the house,” she noted, “and made it, I think, top-notch. It’s time for a new venture, a new start.”

Beth is certainly up for the challenge of doing up another property. She observed: “No house you buy is ever going to be exactly how you want it, so that’s what I’m hopefully going to do.”

Asked to describe her taste in interior design, Beth replied: “I would say it is traditional with a touch of contemporary – it’s not really, I don’t think, the kind of style that will date.”

She added: “The house has still got traditional features. The coving in the lounge is really ornate, and the ceiling roses are quite big and ornate as well.

“We’ve kept those and kept the traditional feel. The kitchen’s quite traditional, with the country-style table and sideboard, but it’s still quite modern.”

Beth says that most of her friends can’t believe the Aspinalls are selling their home. “Everyone that comes in says it’s got that ‘wow’ factor,” she said.

“But you just get used to it, and you think: ‘I want something different now’. Even though it’s such a beautiful home, there’s nothing else we can do to it.”

As far as the house is concerned, the room Beth will miss most is the kitchen, where she spends most of her time when at home. She also acknowledges that they have wonderful neighbours either side.

Commenting on what she and her family will miss most about the area, she concluded:

“My boys love the fact that it’s only five minutes up to the guided bus – that’s quite useful – and there are quite a lot of amenities in Longstanton.

“The schools going up at Northstowe are also going to be a huge bonus for this house.”
