It may have only opened last week, but Jonathon Myles already feels right at home in Vincent Shaw Residential’s newly-opened office in Fulbourn.

The new branch is about five miles from the company’s main office at 1 The Broadway in Cambridge, at the southern end of Mill Road, and represents the first expansion since the business was established in early 2004.

The independent agency sells and lets properties in Cambridge and the surrounding area. Local knowledge comes courtesy of members of staff who have lived and worked in and around the city their entire lives.

One of these is Mr Myles, a partner at Vincent Shaw since 2013 who first worked with co-founder and fellow director Tim Shaw as a trainee in the early 1990s.

“I grew up locally and was schooled locally,” he said. “I live on the eastern side of Cambridge and my kids are schooled locally, so it’s been nice to come back to the area – it’s a bit like coming home, really.

“I’ve been surprised by the amount of acquaintances I’ve bumped into after just a week in the village.”

Mr Myles brings a wealth of experience, having been involved in the industry for 25 years.

“I’ve worked in Cambridge, in the city, for 14 consecutive years,” he said. “Prior to that, I worked in village offices for the majority of my career, so I quite fancied moving back out here.

“I’ve always enjoyed dealing with village and country houses – I think probably more so than the city, though having been based in the city for many years, I’ve dealt with my fair share of properties everywhere within a 10-mile radius of Cambridge.

“I think I’m more of a people person than a property person and I’ve always taken an enthusiastic view of small communities.

“I’m a country man myself – I’ll go out into the fens to walk the dogs at the weekend and I’m a keen angler. I used to run the Pike Anglers Club Cambridge Region out at Bottisham.”

Commenting on the choice of location for the new branch, Mr Myles, who is also a qualified domestic energy assessor, said: “Prior to opening the office, we sold a number of properties in Fulbourn and let a few as well. As a result, we thought it would be a good area to come and work in, and we look forward to helping the residents in the future.”

The premises, at 14 High Street, were previously home to another Cambridge-based agent, Hockeys.

“Hockeys was based in the village for two or three years and the proprietor, Vince Rogowtzow, was an original director at Vincent Shaw when it was set up in 2003.”

Rogowtzow was the ‘Vincent’ in Vincent Shaw, while Tim Shaw, who now runs the company with Mr Myles, was the ‘Shaw’; the pair went their separate ways, amicably, in 2010.

“We’re a traditional agency and I think that will suit a village like Fulbourn, which has a lovely mixture of property,” said Mr Myles. “There are old properties, more modern properties and properties of all sizes. It’s just on the edge of Cambridge but it retains a lovely village identity.”
