Founded in 1958 in the village of Mepal, Greens of Mepal – now based in Witcham – displays most of its eye-catching products at their showsite and sales office at Scotsdales Garden Centre in Great Shelford.

These renowned shed designers and builders (they also specialise in various other types of garden building construction) work alongside Cambridge Garden Studios, who have a sales office next to them at Scotsdales and who were previously featured in the Cambridge Independent.

Julie Green is a director at the small, yet firmly established company, and is the wife of the founder’s son.

“We make sheds, summer houses, garden offices, kennels and sell various other garden buildings like playhouses and aluminium and cedar greenhouses as well over there,” said Mrs Green, referring to the above-mentioned display at Scotsdales. “We make our sheds locally at our factory in Witcham. We were at Mepal for many years, but had to expand so we moved to a larger factory unit just up the road in Witcham.”

Asked what’s popular at the present time, Mrs Green replied: “It’s a seasonal business, but at the moment many people are just trying to make sure they get their sheds sorted out for the winter.

“We’re past the summer house season now, but there are lots of instances where people are doing things they’ve always been meaning to do and need a bit more storage space – get stuff out of the garage or out of the house and into a shed. Once the items are ready in the workshop we then go out and install them on site.”

Discussing the latest trends, Mrs Green said: “Several things, really. People have to find something to fit their size of garden – there’s quite a large choice, but it in the end it’s dictated by the size of people’s gardens and the purpose for which they require the building as to what is suitable.

“We work right next to them,” said Mrs Green of the Cambridge Garden Studios connection. “They’ve actually got a display model/sales office on our Scotsdales showsite. Working with them means we can offer a wider range of office products.”

Predicting where the market might go in 2017, Mrs Green surmised: “I suppose it’s going to be much the same as this year – people always need a good shed, don’t they? I think the real priority is that people are trying to obtain storage space and find something to fit their garden.

“We make to measure as well, so we’re quite flexible with the different sizes of building that we can do, and that’s good for the customer – and I expect that will continue. Also, people are keen to have an attractive summer house, a nice little retreat in the garden, and we can offer different finishes on them, from wood stain to paint.”

The company director continued: “People will have buildings for all sorts of different reasons, but essentially they tend to want something that’s going to be useful. They need somewhere like a shed to put their tools in, and equally with a summer house, it’s often where they might store furniture in the winter. But in the summer they can use it when they’re busy in the garden all day – stop there and have a little sit-down before they carry on with the gardening.”

Mrs Green outlined the company’s objective: “We aim to give value for money and provide a good quality product and service to meet the customer’s needs.”

Commenting on the seasonal nature of the work, she added: “Spring and summer are our busiest time of year, but we’re always busy with something because the orders do keep coming in over the autumn and winter, and you have to maintain your showsite and change some of the show models at this point. There’s never a really quiet time.”
