An historic day for South ladies’ teams
Alice Wright and Alice Hug were on target for Cambridge South as they earned a 2-1 derby win over Cambridge Nomads in East Women’s League, Division 2NW.
A clash of shirts meant that South had to wear bibs from early in the game, but that did not put them off their stride.
South started strongly and had the better of the first 15 minutes, and they opened the scoring when Wright pounced on a rebound after Laura Ludlow’s powerful shot had been saved.
Wright turned provider to set up strike partner Hug to fire the second into the bottom corner.
As they dominated possession, Nomads keeper Erica Hilbery was having a good game to keep South at bay and was named their player of the match.
Nomads were stronger after the break, with Sarah Warren scoring after 10 minutes, but despite dominating play they were unable to find an equaliser.
It was an historic day for South as all their ladies’ teams won their matches.
South II, leaders of 4NW (S), triumphed 5-0 against Royston II.
Dani Arnold scored in the first half, and after a few nervy moments before half time, South kicked on after the break as Izzy MacDonald-Parry fired a hat-trick and Arnold completed the scoring.
Aoife Screaton was named player of the match for her solid defending and distribution.
Lucy Davidson hit a hat-trick as South III defeated Haverhill II in 4NW (S). Keeper Lydia Neil and Lauren Coates were joint players of the match.
The roll call of winners was completed by South IV, who beat Ely City III in 5NW (S).
South were dominant from the start, having 10 successive penalty corners, although they did not convert one.
Anna Crucefix broke the deadlock in the first half, and they doubled their advantage as Bex Jackson finished off player-of-the-match Lou Walker’s aerial pass.
Ely pulled a goal back on the break, but South held on comfortably for the win.
