Bottisham runner takes second leg in British victory

Ben Snaith ran the quickest 400m of his career to help earn Great Britain a gold medal at the European Under-23 Championships in Poland.

The Bottisham-based athlete was on the second leg for GB in the 4x400m relay, in what was the final event of the competition in Bydgoszcz.

Lee Thompson set the quartet off before handing on to Snaith, who increased the lead and handed the baton to Sam Hazel. It was team captain Cameron Chalmers that anchored them home, holding off the challenge of Poland to win in 3min 3.65sec.

“I’ve been told an unofficial split of 46.00 and I’ve never run anywhere near that in my life!,” Snaith told British Athletics. “It was the adrenaline, what a team effort it was.

‘I felt if we ran as we did on Saturday and had Cameron on the final leg then we could win it, and that’s what happened.

“To beat the Poles in their home stadium was extra special.”
