The Leys School Sports complex instructor comes out of retirement for success

Bruno Vincente has come out of retirement to be crowned the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations British Kickboxing champion.

The 31-year-old, an instructor at The Leys School Sports Complex, was a former professional in his native Portugal, and had represented his country.

Vincente, who first took up the sport in 2002, stepped away from the sport in 2013 having won multiple titles on the domestic and international scene, including a world crown.

However, he was tempted back into the ring at the British championships in Birmingham as some of his students were taking part in the competition, and the skills had not deserted him as he won the 84kg weight category.

It may not mark a permanent return for Vincente, though.

“I just missed competing so I thought why not,” said Vincente. “I took some of my students to the competition so I asked myself, ‘why am I not competing as well?’.

“It was quite good on one hand, but on another hand a lot of memories came back.

“They came back after the fight and I don’t know if I’m ready to do that again.

“For four years I thought I was that fit, and after that fight, a lot of past memories just returned again so it was a bit hard to deal with that.”

There was also a medal for Ricardo Miragaia, a student at Vincente’s kickboxing academy, who finished third in the 69kg category.
