City stay top of the league
Bella Simmons notched a double as Cambridge City won 4-1 against Ipswich Wanderers in the Eastern Region Women’s Football League, Division One.
The visitors seized on City giving possession away to open the scoring and despite having a lot of the ball, the hosts did not create many clear-cut chances to draw level.
Their best opportunity came after Simmons was taken down in the area, but Bronte Rapley was unable to convert the penalty.
After the break, Simmons restored parity with a strike from the edge of the box, and she then scored again to make it 2-1.
Rachel Pearce and Sarah Mosley were on target to complete the win as City sit top of the league with games in hand over their opponents.
Carla Penny and Erin Fox were at the double for Cambridge City Development as they won 6-0 against Milton in S-Tech Women’s Championship South.
Milton had scored in the dying seconds of the previous match between the teams to earn a 2-2 draw, and so City were determined to take the game to the visitors from the off.
They started brightly and eventually broke the deadlock midway through the half thanks to a low strike from Penny.
City stepped up a gear after half time as Penny got a second, Fox scored two and Anna Wilson and Tegan Wyman got one apiece to complete the win.
A further boost for City was that three of the players – Fox, Lucy Hurst and Amelia Luxford – were stepping up from the under-16s.
