Lilywhites make first-round trip to Clanfield 85

Guy Habbin will have strength in depth at his disposal when Cambridge City’s youngsters travel to Oxfordshire to face Clanfield 85 in the first round of the FA Youth Cup tomorrow night (November 2).

Harry Farrow, Alex Lyratzopolous, Adam Capel and Josh Lowe have all been part of the first-team set-up this year and will bring experience to the under-18s for their fifth match in this season’s competition.

City have so far beaten Felixstowe & Walton (3-2 after extra time), Hadleigh United (7-0), Haverhill Rovers (2-0) and Leiston (1-0 aet).

And while under-18s lead coach Habbin knows little about Clanfield 85, he is confident City will give a good account of themselves.

“We don’t stray from our beliefs which is to get the ball down and play through the thirds,” said Habbin. “We’re blessed, I think, with some of the best technical players in the area.

“We have a really good youth set-up and if you look at our sides and how competitive they are, we hope to bring through a player to the first team every year.

“It’s always the challenge to try to get someone that Robbie [Nightingale, first-team manager] and Andy [Jolley, development team manager] can use.

“Whether that is achievable or not every year, who knows? But it would be fantastic. Do we want to win games? Of course we do, but the priority is to develop the group of players we have.”

Meanwhile, Cambridge City’s first team lost 2-0 to Alvechurch in the FA Trophy, first qualifying round last Saturday, while Histon were beaten 2-0 by Brantham Athletic in the Thurlow Nunn League, Premier Division.
