Cambridge City’s participation in this year’s FA Trophy was brought to an end with a 2-1 defeat to Basford United.

The Nottinghamshire side are one of the form teams in the Evo-Stik League, sitting in third place in the North Premier Division, but the Lilywhites have been going well in the last month, with a run of six matches unbeaten.

City dominated the early exchanges without testing the Basford keeper, and the sucker punch was to come in the ninth minute.

A ball was played across the box and James Reid slotted in from close range.

Just before the half-hour, Basford doubled their lead.

The visitors broke and a pass into the box picked out Nathan Watson, who finished past City keeper Liam Gooch.

The hosts battled back into the game and they were rewarded when Ebby Nelson-Addy cut into the box and fired an angled shot past Basford keeper Kieran Preston.

James Hall was forced off early in the second half through injury, and was replaced by Lewis Whitehead.

And City looked the more likely to score in the second half.

Nelson-Addy crossed for Ryan Sharman who headed into the ground when well-placed at the back post, and Jordan Gent hooked his effort wide when picked out by Whitehead.

Gent was called into action at the other end to block a goalbound effort, and as the game swung back and forth, Preston produced a double save to thwart Whitehead.

City are back in Evo-Stik League South, Division One Central this Saturday, hosting Aylesbury at the Glass World Stadium.
