Lilywhites land home draw
Cambridge City have been handed a home draw against St Neots Town in the FA Cup, first qualifying round.
The clash with the Evo-Stik League Southern, Premier Division side will be on Friday, September 1 and is a reward for the Lilywhites’ victory over Stamford in the preliminary round.
It was the first time that City had entered that stage of the competition in 33 years, and they included Mason Spence in their line-up, with the 22-year-old left-back having joined from Biggleswade Town last week.
Stamford had Mike Armstrong sent-off for a foul on Tom Knowles in the 74th minute, and the deciding goal came 11 minutes later.
Ben Robinson picked out Salim Relizani in the box, and the midfielder got between the defenders to head the ball past the outstretched hand of the Stamford goalkeeper.
“I’m delighted for Salim Relizani to get the winner,” said City manager Robbie Nightingale.
“We don’t often see him getting goals with his head, but it was a great ball in from Ben Robinson and Salim has done well to apply the finish and get between two markers. We have two tough games next weekend against Beaconsfield and Bedford.”
City face Beaconsfield at home on Saturday, and Bedford away on Bank Holiday Monday.
