Late winner beats Northampton

Cambridge City Ladies have marched into the next stage of the SSE Women’s FA Cup after a 3-2 win at Northampton Town Ladies in the third qualifying round

The Northampton midfield were on top in the early stages of the match, and they opened the scoring to take a 1-0 lead into half time.

City were much better in the second half, with Grace Stanley holding off two defenders to slide the ball past the advancing keeper to level the scores.

Although City were enjoying the majority of the play, they were finding it difficult to break Northampton down.

But the deadlock was broken in the 85th minute when Stanley was taken down in the box, and Bronte Rapley kept a cool head to stroke home the resultant penalty.

As City looked to play out the last few minutes, Northampton broke clear and scored in the last minute of normal time.

With extra time looming, Stanley managaed to wriggle her way into the Northampton box to fire into the top right-hand corner, giving the keeper no chance.

City have been drawn away to Leyton Orient in the fourth qualifying round on November 13.
