Defender tips Lilywhites to launch comeback

Jordan Gent is predicting that Cambridge City will be leading the challenge for promotion from Evo Stik League South East division.

The 25-year-old centre-back was a key member of the team that nearly produced a miraculous escape from relegation last season.

But after they suffered the drop, Gent was quick to commit himself to the Lilywhites in a bid to get them back into the Premier Division in the new campaign.

“It was an easy decision,” said Gent. “It didn’t take much selling from Robbie (Nightingale, City’s manager) to be honest.

“Everyone knows the club, and we’ve probably got to be the biggest club at this level of football now.

“Unfortunately, it’s the lowest level the club’s ever been but I do believe that what Robbie is trying to do, and with the players that are there and have re-signed we’re going to be right up there next season challenging to come straight back up.”

And Gent knows what it will take to bounce back, having won the Division One title
with St Neots.

“I played that level for many years,” he said. “We won it about five years ago now so I know that level of football so I would like to think that I know what it takes to win that league and I’m confident we will do well.

“With the players we’ve got, I don’t think there’s any doubt that we will be up there challenging.”

He added: “I know we’ve signed Ian Miller and I’m sure we will add one or two more.

“Hopefully we will get a few more players to commit to next season that were with us last year as well because that side is more than good enough to challenge anyway.”

City kick off their pre-season fixtures away to Haverhill Borough this Saturday (July 8), and they have a further seven friendlies before the league campaign starts on August 12.
