And Cambridge United Women make progress in FA Cup

Laura Mills left it late to help Cambridge City maintain their 100 per cent record in the Eastern Region Women’s Football League, Premier Division with a 2-1 win over Wymondham Town.

In an even first half where both sides had a few chances to score, it was the Norfolk team that took the lead from close range after a free kick into the box had caused chaos.

It did not take long for City to get back on level terms.

Charlotte Gillies raced through on goal and in a bid to make a challenge, a Wymondham defender put the ball past her own goalkeeper.

In the second half, City were sharper and more determined, playing a higher tempo game.

They were thwarted by the Wymondham keeper though as the game seemed destined for a draw.

But Lauren Tomlinson won the ball in her own half, made ground down the left and put in an inch-perfect cross for Mills to fire home at the far post.

In the S-Tech Women’s League Cup, Cambridge City Development secured a 6-1 win over Histon reserves.

Megan Tonks fired five goals for City, and Ellie Cullum grabbed one.

Philippa Hayden-Evans scored a second-half goal for Histon.

Cambridge United reached the third qualifying round of the Women’s SSE FA Cup with a 6-0 win over Harlow Ladies.

Kayleigh-Anne Burt, Vicky Neal, Kelley Blanchflower, Faith Hewitt, Stephanie Gale and Gabriell Whitehurst were on target to set up a home clash with Stevenage.

Lucy Gateson netted twice and Mollie Coupar and Chloe Smith got one apiece as the U’s development side beat Ipswich Town 4-0 in the FA Women’s National League, Reserve South/South East Division.
