Winger grabs decisive goal for Lilywhites
Nathan Olunkanmi was the star for Cambridge City as they won 3-2 against Bedford Town in Evo-Stik League South, Division One Central.
The winger was a menace to Bedford all afternoon, and added to two assists with a late winner as the Lilywhites followed up their FA Cup victory over Harborough Town on Saturday with victory in the league on bank holiday Monday.
It was a bad start for City against Bedford as they conceded after just four minutes.
They appeared to be slightly sleepy in defence as Dan Walker squared for Craig Daniel to side-foot home.
As the match settled down, City got further control in midfield and that was allowing Olunkanmi the space to cause mayhem on the left wing.
He was running past right-back Brett Longden for fun.
The equaliser came in the 26th minute as Olunkanmi floated a delightful, inswinging cross for Ryan Sharman to beat the offside trap and hammer home.
City took the lead when Olunkanmi scampered away again down the left, and after his squared low cross into the box was not dealt with properly, Ebby Nelson-Addy slammed home in the six-yard box.
However, City gifted Bedford an equaliser just before half time.
A clearance by keeper Liam Gooch was headed forwarded by Callum Donnelly and after another defensive mix-up, the ball fell to Paul Benson to hit into an empty net.
After the break, Bedford had more control in the middle of the pitch and were posing a greater threat.
Where Olunkanmi had been the chief threat in the first half, the Lilywhites were struggling to get him into the game.
Donnelly flashed a 25-yard free kick narrowly wide for Bedford, and then Longden fired over the bar from distance.
Bedford substitute and former City striker Lee Roach broke the offside trap to face Gooch one-on-one, but his effort was smothered by the keeper.
The winning goal came in the 89th minute.
A long throw by Jack Wilkinson was flicked on by Jordan Gent, and Olunkanmi managed to turn the ball into the net.
There was a scare for City as Connor Furlong kneed a corner onto the bar from just inside the box, but they held out to secure their first league win of the season.
