No joy on the road in Surrey

Cambridge were only able to pick up a losing bonus point from their trip to Esher in National League One.

The Surrey side had lost their opening three matches of the season, but their defensive display made them difficult for Richie Williams’ team to break down.

Esher scrum-half Jack Walsh got the opening try in the third minute, with Owen Waters adding the extras.

Cambridge drew level when they were awarded a penalty try in the eighth minute after a tackle on a player without the ball.

Waters nudged Esher back in front with a 24th-minute penalty, and they extended their lead to 17-7 at the break after another try through Charlie Grossington, with Waters converting.

Ben Penfold reduced the arrears to 17-10 for Cambridge with a 57th-minute penalty, but Esher’s defence held out in the second half, keeping the visitors at bay to limit them to a losing bonus point.

Cambridge play host to Plymouth Albion at Volac Park this Saturday.
