Former Leicester Tiger and Glasgow Warrior on the way to Volac Park

Cambridge Rugby Club have pulled off a coup by landing Scottish under-20 back Sam Yawayawa ahead of the new National League One season.

The 20-year-old winger, who can also play at outside centre, will move to Volac Park having previously been with Glasgow Warriors.

Yawayawa, who is Fijian born, played for Edinburgh at under-16 level, but then joined the Leicester Tigers academy and during his time in England played for the national side’s under-18s.

Having spent time on loan at Nottingham in the Championship in the 2016/17 season, he moved to Glasgow Warriors last summer, making his Scotland debut against Wales in the Under-20 Six Nations Championships.

Cambridge head coach Richie Williams was made aware through a mutual contact that Yawayawa was looking to return to England in order to get some more opportunities and regular rugby under his belt.

Yawayawa spent some time on trial at Cambridge, training with the club for a week and catching the eye as well as integrating into the group.

“It’s good news for us and it’s helping Sam as well,” said Williams.

“He felt out of love a little bit with rugby last season through the lack of opportunities so we’re going to give him an opportunity to get back enjoying his rugby.”

Yawayawa was winger in most of his age grade rugby, but can also play at outside centre.

“He’s a typical Islander, just very comfortable on the ball in attack, very good in defence, very strong

and he has a very low centre of gravity as well,” said Williams.

“I think he is a real talent and someone that will do well in National One this season. He’s a good kid and just wants to play rugby again.”

Cambridge pride themselves on developing players to push them on to Premiership or Championship rugby, and Williams hopes that will be the case for Yawayawa.

“He still has the ambition to go on and play professional rugby,” said the head coach. “He realises now that his path is probably a little bit different to some players that have come through the academy system in England.

“I think he will get some really good experiences from Cambridge and playing National One rugby, but we’re hopeful that as with a number of players that have come through Cambridge, he will go on to play Championship and Premiership rugby in the future.”

Yawayawa is Cambridge’s seventh signing of the summer, following the additions of Kieran Duffin, Tom Harrison, Gillian Benoy, Zianna Alexis, Lawrence Rayner and Steve Hipwell.

They have their first pre-season game away to Hertford this Thursday (August 9), which will be followed by a double-header home game with Sheffield Tigers on August 18 and a trip to Coventry on Friday, August 24.

Cambridge are hosting an open training session at the ground this Saturday (August 11) from 11am to 1pm followed by a barbecue.
