Link ups have served Volac Park side well in recent seasons

Cambridge are set to maintain their strong links with Premiership and Championship clubs for the 2018/19 National League One campaign.

During recent years, the Volac Park side have been able to call on dual registered players such as Alex Moon, George Furbank and Ehren Painter from Northampton Saints and the likes of Dan Lewis from Bedford Blues.

Head coach Richie Williams has added six new signings as he shapes the Cambridge squad, and it is possible that the links with clubs higher up the echelon will bring a few more players closer to the start of the season.

“It will probably come to fruition a bit later on into the summer,” said Williams.

“We’ve continued our link with Northampton so again there is potential in having another two players from there to come on season-long loans.

“There is also the potential to have one or two Coventry players as well coming down to us on full-season loan deals.

“We would be silly not to carry on the link with Northampton, but we’re trying to build a squad from within and I think that will probably give us a bit more longevity at this level and make us a bit more sustainable as a rugby club.

“But if we do need to bring in more quality than we’ve got those really good partnerships with Northampton and potentially Coventry as well.”

There are also the ties with Bedford Blues, and that means a return for full-back Joey Green and back-row forward Joe Britton, who were at Volac Park last year.

“They are going to be on development contracts at Bedford next year so I’ve been liaising with their academy manager and we will continue with the same arrangement and the same agreement we had last year with those two players,” said Williams.

“We’ve got a number of teams that we want to continue links with and I think most of the players that came to Cambridge last season and the year before fitted in really well.”
