Challenge Cup glory for U’s shadow scholars

Cambridge Regional College students struck glory in the Dubai Challenge Cup.

The team, part of the Cambridge United shadow scholarship scheme run by the college for boys aged 16 to 19, flew out to Dubai to go head to head with sides from 11 different countries in the Dubai Super Cup.

In the group stages, they won all six games, beating teams from Columbia, Dubai, Pakistan and Africa, but they lost to Renaldo Academy in a penalty shoot-out in the quarter-finals.

It meant they went into the Challenge Cup, where they defeated Dubai City 2-1 in the semi-finals, and then TFA Dubai 2-1 in the final.

CRC lecturers James McCabe and Tom Hall led the team and said: “We’re delighted that the lads got to go home with a trophy after some of the performances they put in.

“The heat was a huge factor, even in the evening games, but they all put 100 per cent in to every match and really played as a team. The whole experience was new for them, playing abroad against teams from all over the world but they didn’t let it faze them.

“The group of lads we took out were a credit to the college and themselves with their behaviour and attitude. We will definitely be looking to go back next year.”
