League One side prove too strong for the U’s

Cambridge United suffered a 3-1 defeat at Southend United in the Checkatrade Trophy last night.

In the Southern Group B match at Roots Hall, Joe Dunne rotated his side from the one that won 1-0 at Stevenage in Sky Bet League Two last Saturday, with Greg Taylor making his return from injury.

The U’s broke the deadlock nine minutes into the second half, Reggie Lambe heading home his first goal for the club from Jevani Brown’s pinpoint cross from the left.

League One side Southend were back on level terms within minutes as Shawn McCoulsky put in Harry Bunn’s cross, and he had his second when powering in a header from Stephen Hendrie’s cross in the 64th minute.

The Shrimpers wrapped up the win in the 83rd minute as Isaac Hutchinson fired a low shot into the bottom corner.

David Amoo fired Cambridge United to the 1-0 win at Stevenage.

The winger grabbed the only goal of the game in the 15th minute, with a first-time volley at the back post following Jabo Ibehre’s perfect cross.

United’s next league match is at home to Carlisle United on Saturday (September 8).
