Head coach delighted with competition for places

Joe Dunne has highlighted the benefit of having competition for places at Cambridge United.

There is almost a clean bill of health at the Abbey Stadium, with Barry Corr and Piero Mingoia edging closer to returning to the first-team fold.

“I think we’re in a healthier position than we certainly were,” said interim head coach Dunne.

“At the start of this week we had an empty changing room and touch wood that continues.

“Barry is running on the grass and Piero is back in with the group this week, it may be a touch too early this weekend.

“However, we’ve had a bigger group to train with and that’s positive for everybody.”

It means that there are plenty of options from which Dunne has to pick.

And he has reiterated his faith in the squad and the ability of all players within in it to do the job if turned to.

“Competition for places is important, it’s motivation,” said Dunne. “If you don’t play, if you’re not at your standard and what you can do then someone will take your place, and that’s where we are at the moment.

“It only takes one player to lose a bit of form or a rotation, and you can rely on other people to come in and have a right good go.

“I think that’s the trust I have in the group; the one’s who are playing and the ones who are not in the team.

“I could pick any team and I think this group would go out and do their best for the club, that includes players who haven’t been playing like Paul Lewis, David [Amoo] from a regular point of view or anybody I could choose; as Medy [Elito] has proved.

“When he came in, he scored a goal and has had a couple of games; I feel I can trust the group and that is important.”
