Luke Berry double helps U’s to victory

Cambridge United kick-started their Sky Bet League Two play-off hopes with a 2-1 win at Crewe Alexandra last weekend.

Luke Berry broke the deadlock in the 37th minute, driving the ball home inside the box after Harrison Dunk’s header had been saved by Crewe keeper Ben Garratt.

But the hosts were level in the 58th minute when U’s captain Leon Legge diverted a cross into his own net.

However, the winning goal came in the 72nd minute when Berry fired in a free kick. Paul Lewis was shown a red card late in the game, but it has since been rescinded

“It was a hard-fought display, but it was a display that had a lot of quality from both teams,” said United manager Shaun Derry.

“Crewe are a tough team to beat at this moment in time, having come off the back of three consecutive wins and conceding zero goals. We knew it was going to be a tough afternoon.

“I asked for bravery after Tuesday night. I asked for responsibilities and character to show to get on the ball, and I thought that was testament to the performance.

“I thought it was a high-quality performance with a lot of individual strong performances in it. We thoroughly deserved to win, we played really well. I’m really pleased.”

The U’s face bottom club Leyton Orient at the Cambs Glass Stadium this Saturday.
