U’s remain in Sky Bet League Two relegation places

Joe Dunne was left to rue Cambridge United’s continuing travails in front of goal as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat at home to MK Dons in Sky Bet League Two.

The U’s produced another strong performance, but a first-half defensive error allowed Chuks Aneke the opportunity to power through to score the only goal of the game.

United had plenty of chances, but could not hit the back of the net and so they remain in the relegation places.

“At some stage they need to go in,” said head coach Dunne. “Offensively we did well in the second half.

“They had to change their system and made the substitution to deal with us, we’ve pushed another team.

“The message to the players is: when you’re down the bottom like this and involved in it, sometimes it’s really dire performances, the changing room’s not correct.

“All those things are not characteristics of us at the moment.

“We’re a good group who train hard, who work hard, who work hard for each other, who create chances, who go out every day to try to win a match.

“Unfortunately it’s another example of another hard luck story. It’s got to stop.

“I believe if they keep believing in it, it will.”

As for the goal, which saw Brad Halliday muscled off the ball on halfway by Aneke, Dunne said: “Another day goes by when we should have got something from the game. I just felt the manner of the goal was just awful.

“Somehow we’ve ended up away from what we work on and that’s just down to individuals doing their jobs properly – unfortunately it has cost us.

“We have a certain way of defending at that moment and we left it one-v-one at the back. Chuks has obviously got a bit more strength and Brad has to learn from that; when to shuffle people out to the side, so it’s a soft goal from our point of view.”
