Canaries earn pre-season win over U’s

Joe Dunne acknowledged the “perfect game” as Cambridge United continued their pre-season plans with a defeat to Norwich City.

Goals from Josh Murphy and Ben Godfrey gave the Canaries a 2-0 win in the first of two hour-long matches, with the second fixture finishing 0-0.

And assistant coach Dunne said: “It was the perfect game in terms of what we wanted at this stage; you could see that we played a quality team.

“We did a lot of good things and we did a lot of things that we would like at this stage to improve on, and we got that from the game against a top-class outfit.

“If you look at the first half, I think Norwich were, as a team, physically ahead of us in terms of preparation. You could see the speed of passing, speed of movement and the spaces that they found.

“And we found a lot of time we had to run off the ball but what a great way to get fitness, running around and they certainly felt that, but the group in the first half will benefit from that going forward.”

St Neots striker Jevani Brown was on trial with the U’s, rattling the bar with a 25-yard effort, and he may earn another chance to impress.

“We added two triallists and both of them had a good go, and it was very important we had them based on the fact that we wanted to get 60 minutes into as many players as we can,” said Dunne.

“I thought both of them acquitted themselves very well and obviously there was a spectacular piece of skill from Jevani – I think the posts are still moving. Both did well and they came into the group at such short notice and helped us out so we will see where we go.”
