Hope for U’s striker comeback against Colchester United
A late decision will be made on Barry Corr’s involvement in Cambridge United’s match with Colchester United at the Cambs Glass Stadium on Saturday.
The Irishman missed Tuesday night’s 3-2 defeat to Sky Bet League Two leaders Doncaster Rovers, and with Uche Ikpeazu also on the sidelines, manager Shaun Derry was left to rue the U’s luck with injuries.
“I think I’ve spent many minutes talking about the implications of injuries to our season and it’s very much the same,” he said.
“It’s been a frustrating season injury wise but one where many other teams would be telling the same story.
“I think when you hit these parts of the season where it’s Saturday, Tuesday and throw in the large amount of miles that we’ve had to travel, it causes added problems as well.
“It is what it is and it’s something that we try to deal with and we tried to deal with the fact that two of our most potent centre forwards were missing on Tuesday night and we still managed to create as many chances as we did.”
Corr has had impact since returning from a long-term injury that kept him out for more than a year, and while he could be in contention for a place in the squad at the weekend, he will not be rushed back into the frame.
“I have to highlight the management of injuries, it’s something that is really important, especially Barry Corr’s injury,” said Derry.
“It’s something that is complex and it (managing the injury) is something that’s on the frontline because it’s being done at the first-team level – we’ve all decided that’s the best way.
“We’ve all decided that the quicker Barry Corr can come back into the group the better, if only for 20 or 30 minutes.
“Sadly on Saturday [against Barnet] there was a feeling in his groin, and it was a feeling that we felt we couldn’t gamble on which ruled him out for Tuesday night.
“It was the right call to rule him out on Tuesday night, and we will have to see how he is right until the very last minute on Friday.”
