U’s looking to make positive opening

Shaun Derry is hoping Cambridge United can give supporters some early Christmas cheer at the Abbey Stadium against Newport County tomorrow.

And it is not just the points for the start of the festive period that the U’s head coach is seeking, it is to be swift out of the blocks in the early stages of the Sky Bet League Two fixture.

Derry is urging fans to turn the Abbey into a cacophony of noise in a similar vein to that which roared them to success over Stevenage in the last home match on November 25.

“The players need the surroundings to be the best possible surroundings so they can get the best out of themselves individually and collectively, and I think that’s really important that I get that message over to everybody,” he said.

“This is a good football club, with a good set of fans, with an honest set of players, a good set of players and we all need to be together; if we’re not, then there might be a problem.”

Derry admits that a positive start to the match from the U’s will be key in order to get the crowd going from the first whistle.

“It works both ways, I understand that as well,” he said. “As much as we’re asking the fans to get right behind us, the fans are saying give us something to shout about.

“Hopefully, if we can work together then everyone is a winner.”
